Worker Shortfall Continues To Delay Arkansas (US) Construction Projects

Experts in the Arkansas industry are coming up with innovative ideas to engage young people in a sector that is understaffed.

A labor shortage that is considered “severe” or “very severe” was noted by 58% of respondents in a recent study conducted by Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC). To reach full employment by the end of 2024, the construction sector will need to add half a million jobs to its current hiring rate, according to the poll.

The president of ABC’s Arkansas chapter stated, “If you look and talk to most of our contractors, they are all short on staff.” It seems like they are always looking for the next employee when you speak with them.

In his opinion, the industry’s failure to publicize career prospects in this profession is the root of the shortfall. Through homeschool programs and apprenticeships, his organization is attempting to achieve precisely that, with the ultimate goal of filling those posts.

It’s a four-year program. Students can sit for the journeyman’s exam once they have completed the four years. They take on leadership roles in their companies after passing the Journeys exam.

One of the program’s alumni is a plumber and project coordinator. Initially, he tried working at Starbucks and going to college, but neither of these fit him well. Though he acknowledged that each person would fit in differently, he strongly advised at least considering a career in building.

Everyone believes that it takes a lot of effort and sweat, according to him. Working and excavating ditches is challenging, but there are other trades like carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work as well.

Especially for young people, the president stressed that there are more prospects in construction than one may imagine. Simply look at the potential in the construction sector, and they will be surprised.
