USA Labor Shortages Under Spotlight in New Report

A shortage of skilled construction labor seriously impairs the ability to build more homes and increase the supply and affordability of housing. The latest Construction Labour Market Report updates state-level employment data and prognosis for residential construction jobs.

Here are the key takeaways from the report:

  • With residential construction holding the lion’s share of 3.2 million of the 7.9 million construction payroll jobs, that puts the industry in a very tough predicament, as it will now have to hire 723,000 more workers per year to keep pace with demand.
  • The construction industry happens to be one of the ones that is always in demand, with the numbers standing at around 300,000 to 400,000 that open up every month. This frequency, therefore, presents a terrible situation that the manpower is in.
  • At least 90 percent of the single-family builders reported that they were short of carpenters, while 80–85 percent of them complained of shortages of subcontractors in six other trades.
  • For eleven of the sixteen trades, over 80 percent of remodelers reported a subcontractor shortage.
  • Since 2011, the number of construction workers between the ages of 25-54 has shrunk by six percent.

The latest studies indicate that today’s construction business needs to focus on the following three critical priorities:

  • Encourage those who haven’t previously considered a career in construction to seek training and employment in the trades;
  • Encourage the change of immigration laws directed at generating the next wave of immigrants who are seeking opportunities in the US, etc.
  • Provide evidence of the link between no-home and the labor crisis in the building industry to support the affordable housing movement.
