US Hotels Added 700 Jobs in June Amid Labor Shortage

Despite U.S. hotels expanding employment possibilities in June, a large number of jobs in the hotel sector remain unfilled as a result of the ongoing national manpower issue. The American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) released a statement stating that new government data indicates that 700 jobs were added to the payrolls of American hotels.

There are still roughly 196,000 fewer workers in the industry than there were before the pandemic, despite the Bureau of Labour Statistics (BLS) stating that overall employment is close to 1.92 million. Along with removing previously reported job growth for the industry, the BLS has revised the total number of hotel positions in the United States.

According to AHLA, hotels will always pay top dollar, provide benefits, and allow employees to work from home in order to draw and keep employees. In comparison to average salaries in the wider economy (+22.2%), average hotel wages (+26%) have increased by approximately 15% during the epidemic. AHLA stated, citing Indeed, that tens of thousands of hotel jobs remain unfilled in the United States even after these improvements.

Despite the fact that there were 8.1 million job opportunities in the United States as of May, the BLS statistics showed that there were only 6.6 million unemployed individuals to cover these positions.

AHLA Interim President & CEO stated that despite near-record high wages, growing benefits, and increased flexibility, the hotel sector is still not employing as many people as it should be halfway through the year. He further stated that their members—many of whom are small business owners—can receive relief from Congress and the administration, and AHLA will keep pushing for measures to increase the pool of available workers.

AHLA requested that, in accordance with the authority granted by Congress under the Further Consolidated Appropriations Act, the Department of Homeland Security issue an estimated 65,000 more H-2B temporary nonagricultural worker visas in order to help with workforce expansion. The organization likewise requested Congress to approve the few laws that would increase employment.
