The UK is All Set to Bring More Foreign Skilled Workers to Bridge the Workforce Shortage

In the post-pandemic era, the major problem in front of the UK is dealing with the workforce shortage. Almost every sector, especially construction, reports a scarcity of skilled workers. In order to grapple with skill shortages, the UK government is easing immigration laws. They believe easing immigration laws will help in bringing skilled overseas workers who can bridge the labor shortage across the UK.

In response to persistent shortages in the construction sector, the UK government is taking multiple measures to relax immigration laws amid worries. Those in the trades, such as carpenters, bricklayers, and roofers, have been suggested for insertion on the “shortage occupation list” by the Migration Advisory Committee, which advises the government on immigration. Employers are now able to hire foreign workers at a lower income threshold than the typical “skilled worker” level and with cheaper visa costs, thanks to the list.

After Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced the abolition of illegal immigration, the plan, which was first reported by the Financial Times late Wednesday, runs the danger of causing conflict within the ruling Conservative Party.

The government acknowledges that targeted immigration in important industries will now be necessary, even if Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has unveiled measures in his budget on March 15 to entice economically inactive individuals back into employment within the UK.

According to the most recent data, since February 2020, there have been an additional 520,000 people of working age who are neither employed nor searching for employment. The Office for National Statistics said this month that by 2026, there would be 726,000 more inactive persons in the UK between the ages of 16 and 64 than before the epidemic.

Healthcare providers, civil engineers, veterinarians, and architects are among the occupations listed on the shortage list. In a statement sent to the media via email, a government representative said: We actively and closely work with the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) to ensure that our points-based system benefits the UK and serves the economy’s best interests by giving priority to the skills and talent we need. We also need to promote and encourage long-term investment in the local workforce. This also includes checking out the list of shortage occupations to ensure it accurately represents the current labor market.
