The Skill Gap: A Record Number of the UK Users are Searching for “Skilled Migrant Visa”

In recent research, it has been revealed that the UK is searching for Skilled Workers, and to hire non-UK resident workers, they require a skilled migrant visa. Stratups.co.uk conducted this research on 1st February 2023, claiming that this visa had reached its highest level after the third anniversary of Brexit.

A score of 100 was achieved for the first time for the term “skilled worker visa,” according to Google Trends statics. In contrast, 78% of UK businesses reported talent shortages and hiring challenges at the end of the previous year. It represents an increase of over 15% since January 2022.

British businesses have been turning overseas to fill the widening skill gap as the government reduces spending to level up Britain to increase employment and strengthen the economy. The “Great Resignation,” a widespread trend of employee departures, has affected an estimated 85% of UK companies, and Brexit is the main cause of the skill gap contributing to 330,000 worker shortages.

Other factors include older workers retiring sooner, increasing the percentage by 1.3% last year, and more young people enrolling in college than entering the workforce, up from 43.1% to 44.4% in 2020-21. The gap between prompted digital roles and current workforce availability has also grown due to the quick technological advancement that followed COVID-19.

A senior writer and researcher at Startup.co.uk, Helena Young, said, “The skills gap is a danger to the expansion of SMEs in the modern economy. Firms now face serious staffing challenges due to the hiring crisis, on top of the challenges posed by rising energy prices, declining consumer spending, and inadequate government support. According to Google Trends data, companies are increasingly taking matters into their own hands to prevent the negative effects of hiring incorrectly.

According to recent research, 74% of UK firms feel they need more preparation for the future, and 1 in 5 said the skills gap would be their greatest barrier to progress in 2023. The government needs to support UK small businesses more.”

The simplest method for an employer to sponsor a new foreign employee for long-term employment is through a skilled worker visa. Anyone qualified for the UK’s point-based immigration system can work there with this permit. Before requesting an indefinite leave to remain, they may continue for up to five years. Employers applying for sponsor licenses must pay a one-time charge of £364 for the first 12 months and an additional price of £182 for every additional six months.

Here are a few other ways to fill the skills gaps, as suggested by Helena Young:

The global talent pool is undoubtedly a valuable resource to tap into, but as the fees mentioned earlier demonstrate, it is costly to support a foreign employee. Companies can cut labor expenses by investing in their current workforce and avoiding recruitment and onboarding costs. Here are a few ideas:

Digital Upskilling: Instead of employing foreign workers, this talent search strategy may be more affordable. For workers to increase, their expertise entails funding learning and development programs.

Apprenticeship Scheme: Apprenticeship programs are a cost-effective way to invest in the company’s future. They would eliminate the need for hiring managers to travel great distances to find their newest hire.

Outsourcing Global Freelancers: If you need to hire people for tech roles like software engineers, the other option is tapping into the global freelance network to hire remote workers for short-term project teams so that costly visas are not required.

Modify Recruitment by targeting those over their 50s: Employing those over 50 is a simple way to boost the number of qualified candidates for open positions, as 3.6 million people in the UK between the ages of 50 and 64 are present “economically inactive.”
