Talent Scarcity Looms for UK Recruiters in 2023

In spite of looming recession worries, UK recruiters are upbeat, with 87% planning to employ in 2023, according to a recent study of 2,500 industry professionals. The survey indicates that the largest barrier to hiring in 2023 will be locating people with the necessary abilities, with 29% of recruiters saying that the skills gap has grown from a year ago.

As a result, recruiters may need to fight for benefits in order to draw in top talent.  This results in 86% of recruiters saying that they “sometimes” or “very often” have trouble filling openings. Recruiters, who make up 87% of the workforce, are hiring 43% of new hires to meet net new job requirements and 44% of replacement or backfilling roles. Of recruiters, only 13% expect hiring freezes.

The main challenge that business professionals are facing in the UK, Europe, and the USA is addressing the skills shortage. Finding and interviewing people quicker than the competitors is, as always, the primary challenge.

According to the poll, only 24% of UK recruiters feel confident in their ability to discover the right applicants and use online tools, recruitment sites, and new technology to engage talent. This is a significant decrease in recruiters in the USA and Europe.  This indicates that in the competition for the best candidates, 76% of recruiters need to scale up their search strategies or risk falling behind.

It’s becoming more and more difficult to find qualified people in all industries, but it’s particularly challenging in the automotive (57%), leisure & hospitality (46%), education (45%), and insurance sectors.

The poll additionally revealed that hiring managers are seeking applicants with significantly distinct soft skills across generations. Reliability, for example, is a quality that 13% of Gen Z recruiters look for, whereas 57% of Boomers do. Although only 17% of Boomers look for managerial experience, 40% of Gen Z recruiters do.

As 53% of candidates anticipate more flexibility in their work environment and 39% anticipate more flexibility in their work schedule, flexibility will be crucial to hiring in 2023. Only 25% of companies, the survey finds, actually provide meaningful freedom to new hires.

Recruiters need to pay attention to candidates’ extensive benefit wish lists and strike a balance between company and employee needs in order to succeed in 2023. The competition for the top applicants may soon turn into a fight over benefits as flexible alternatives become the norm in many industries, and candidates demand more from an employer than just competitive pay.

Remote flexibility (50%) is the most desired advantage by employees in 2023, followed by flexible work schedules (49%), skill development and training (45%), wage protection and fair compensation (44%), and healthcare benefits (41%).
