Slovakia Responds To Labor Shortage With Expanded Visa Program

Slovakia has an acute labor shortage problem. Low-skilled workers are in a great shortage for sectors that rely heavily on such workers. Most specifically, the industrial and agricultural industries have faced acute work-related issues as a consequence of this labor shortage. The shortages need urgent solutions.

In response to the challenges posed by this critical situation, the state has introduced legislation designed to let third-country nationals (TCNs) join its labor force. However, the total impact of those measures is yet to be felt. To improve efforts against the shortage, some new programs have already been implemented to expand the issuance of national visas, especially for those industries that are considered to have the highest demand for labor forces.

A new government policy was implemented last year;  its purpose was to facilitate the issuance of visas and the deployment of TCNs in designated industries. This legislation institutes a new visa process for certain sectors of people across the globe in order for them to be utilized for work in areas of Slovakia that are considered most problematic.

Among the new visa regulations is the categorization of key roles in the industrial sector, whereby residents of some countries can receive a national visa.

  • Plant operators for metallurgy and foundry industries
  • Machine operators for rubber product manufacturing
  • Assemblers for mechanical engineering, chemical production, and electronics
  • Forklift truck operators
  • Metal welders and workers
  • Construction and operating electricians
  • Maintenance workers

The national visa is granted for a period of up to one year, depending on the duration of the employment contract. When employment periods are extended, visas may be renewed, likewise, as with visas for family members of workers relocated to Slovakia.

Therefore, these new regulations have aided most of Slovakia’s industrial enterprises in solving one of the major issues, which is the labor deficit that continues to go on. It is now possible, for the first time, to relatively easily integrate a greater number of workers from countries otherwise represented by low numbers in the Slovak labor market.

Besides relieving longstanding labor deficits, this facilitates economic growth when other industries maintain the level of production or increase their production to the former levels. The streamlined visa process can bring further benefits to employers during the onboarding of foreign staff, which means they would be able to do the process much faster and more efficiently. Certain production cycles carry deadlines for some industries that require a steady, reliable workforce.
