Poland Faces Sharp Labor Force Decline Without Migration

Research by the state statistics office projects that the country’s working-age population will drop by over a third by the year 2060 if Poland doesn’t expand its borders to accept more immigrants from outside of Eastern Europe.

Projections show the declining fertility rates and political struggles over increasing immigration to the sixth-biggest economy in the EU. With the labor shortage, the $688 billion Polish economy would be further put under strain by such a decline, which would also put a burden on public budgets as the country’s retirement rate rises.

Poles of working age could become 7.1 million less in less than 40 years from their current 22.2 million. In addition, fewer laborers may enter Poland as a result of the aging populations in Belarus and neighboring Ukraine.

The report stated that greater diversification of the countries of origin of immigrants is essential in order to achieve higher levels of immigration. This would partly make it possible to compensate for the losses in the labor market. More individuals from African or Asian nations will greatly enhance the number of new entrants in the job market.

The ruling Law & Justice party in Poland has included anti-immigrant rhetoric into its nationalist agenda, making migration a major political issue ahead of the October general election. The economic realities have caused this position to collide since numerous countries in the eastern part of the European Union have been secretly hiring non-EU workers to fill long-term labor shortages.

The decline is sharp and alarming for Poland’s labor force. We at Dynamic Staffing Services can make all the difference here by providing customized recruitment solutions, thus helping businesses quickly and efficiently find the right workers for their productive operations.
