Major changes in the Canadian Cabinet, Marc Miller is now the new Immigration Minister

Canada is a top priority for skilled migrant workers because of the standard of living and high-paying jobs. Immigration, Refugees & Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is responsible for skilled labor immigration. Recently, Quebec Member of Parliament Marc Miller has been appointed as the new Immigration Minister of Canada. Miller most recently served as Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, a position designed to assist Indigenous peoples’ self-determination in Canada. Sean Fraser, Canada’s most recent Immigration Minister, has been appointed Minister of Housing, Infrastructure, and Communities.

Miller was elected to Canada’s Parliament for the first time in 2015. The Quebec’s MP worked as a lawyer and served in the Canadian Armed Forces before joining politics. Marc Miller was born and brought up in Montreal. He received his Political Science degree from the Université de Montréal and his law degree from McGill University.

The Cabinet is a group of ministers chosen by Canada’s Prime Minister. They are in charge of pursuing the federal government’s policy goals. Canadian Prime Ministers reshuffle their cabinet every two years or so. The reasons for a shuffle include:

  • Dismissing underperforming ministers,
  • Elevating those the Prime Minister believes have done an excellent job, and
  • Giving the government a chance to renew its policies and public communications for the nation’s development and growth.

Sean Fraser has been the Minister of Immigration for the past two years. Trudeau gave Fraser a list of immigration issues to tackle when he became part of the Federal Government in 2021. This included raising immigration numbers, streamlining application procedures, and promoting French speakers’ immigration to Canada.

Despite the extra challenges of maintaining immigration during the Covid-19 Pandemic while borders were restricted, Sean Fraser overcame many of these concerns. For example, the IRCC recently added category-based attractions to Express Entry to attract specific profiles to Canada, such as French speakers and individuals with the most in-demand experience. He also revealed plans to expand the number of newcomers accepted to Canada each year in the most recent Immigration Level Plans.

Over the next three years, Canada will welcome an increasing number of new immigrants. In 2023, Canada will welcome 465,000 new immigrants. In 2024, the aim will be to 485,000 additional immigrants. It will grow to 500,000 additional immigrants in 2025. The strategy also emphasizes luring immigrants to various parts of the country, including small towns and rural villages, as well as enticing Francophones (French speakers) across the country.

Many businesses struggle to fill vacancies due to Canada’s significant scarcity of competent workers. To solve this issue, Canada has resorted to immigration to fill record numbers of job vacancies. This trend is projected to continue in the future in order to fulfill labour demands and fill critical occupations.

Critical labour market shortages have prompted many to resort to immigration as a solution. This is mirrored in the immigration plan, which views immigration as a tactic to assist companies in finding labor. It also strives to recruit talents for key industries such as healthcare, skilled crafts, engineering, manufacturing, and technology. This will aid in managing Canada’s social and economic issues in the following decade.
