This was the first STEM draw from IRCC since the announcements of the category-based selection draw.

IRCC invited 1,500 applicants with a CRS of 463 or above in a category-based selection draw for healthcare professionals. This was the category’s second round of invites.

On July 7, 2300 invites were granted to Express Entry candidates with strong French language skills and a CRS of 439 or above. The only category-based selection factor that is not occupation-specific is French-speaking ability.

  • June 27-28

In the final week of June, IRCC organized two draws. On June 27, an ‘all-program’ draw was held, inviting 4300 applicants with a minimum CRS score of 486. The next day, the first-ever category-based invitation selection round was held. The IRCC invited 500 applicants with prior work experience in healthcare occupations. They required a CRS score of at least 476.

July saw a higher-than-average number of draws for the month. The last all-program draw was on July 11th, where the CRS score was 505, 12 points lower than this draw. More ITAs were also issued in today’s draw, with 2,000 being invited compared to two weeks ago, with only 800 candidates being invited to apply.

Since the first category-specific draw one month ago, a total of five category-specific draws have occurred. There have been draws for STEM professionals, healthcare occupations, and French speakers in the last two weeks. They have invited a total of 8,600 applicants in total. So far, French speakers have been the most numerous category. In the French language draw, 6,100 individuals were invited to apply.

It was also announced today that a category-specific draw for persons with trading expertise will be conducted this week. This draw will prioritize individuals with trade skills such as carpentry, plumbing, and welding. This will assist Canada’s construction industry in attracting the competent individuals it requires nationwide.

What is a Category-Based Draw?

In the category-based draws, candidates can receive Invitations to Apply (ITAs) with specified skills, training, or language ability. This enables applicants with the most in-demand talents to be selected for Permanent Residency in Canada.

This year, Express Entry Candidates with skills or expertise in one of the following disciplines or good French language skills will be prioritized:

  • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) professions
  • Healthcare
  • Trades; such as Carpenter, Plumbers, and Contractors
  • Agriculture
  • Transport

To qualify, candidates must have at least six months of work experience in a relevant occupation in the previous three years. In addition to category-based draws, the IRCC will continue to organize all-program draws like this one and program-specific draws as needed.

What is Express Entry?

The Canadian government uses Express Entry to administer applications for Canadian Permanent Residency. Express Entry ranks candidates’ profiles using a point-based system known as the CRS. The system oversees three primary programs:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
  • Federal Skilled Trade Program (FSTP)
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

Applying for Express Entry requires two steps. The first step is to submit your Expression of Interest Application to the Express Entry pool.

You can submit your entire application to the IRCC after submitting a profile and receiving an invitation to apply for Canadian permanent residency.
