Hyundai E&C Clinches $145 Million Contract for Saudi’s Neom-Yanbu Project

Hyundai Engineering & Construction (Hyundai E&C) has achieved a significant milestone by securing Saudi Arabia’s High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Transmission Line project. This accomplishment further reinforces Hyundai E&C’s prominent position in the construction sector of Saudi Arabia.

In a recently made announcement, Hyundai E&C revealed that it had entered into a contract worth $145 million. This contract pertains to the ‘Saudi Neom-Yanbu 525㎸ High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Transmission Line Construction Project,’ commissioned by the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC-COA).

The project aims to enhance Saudi Arabia’s power grid by establishing a 605-kilometre-long HVDC transmission line. This transmission line will stretch from the Yanbu region, a major hub for power generation on Saudi Arabia’s west coast, to the newly developed city of Neom. Hyundai E&C’s responsibilities within this project encompass the first segment, which involves constructing 207 kilometres of transmission lines and 450 transmission towers. This segment is scheduled for completion by July 2027.

HVDC transmission technology converts the alternating current (AC) power plants generated into high-voltage direct current for efficient transmission to the designated destination. Compared to AC transmission, HVDC offers lower energy loss over long distances and compatibility with AC systems of varying frequencies. This feature contributes to its remarkable stability and efficiency. Particularly, HVDC proves highly valuable for transmitting renewable energy sources like solar and offshore wind power, positioning it as a cutting-edge transmission technology for the future.

Hyundai Engineering & Construction has earned its reputation by successfully completing various power grid projects commissioned by SEC-COA, thereby establishing a robust foundation of trust. This success story led Hyundai E&C to secure a comprehensive turnkey contract for a design, procurement, and construction project. This accomplishment once again showcases Hyundai E&C’s prowess in cutting-edge technology and its Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) capabilities on a global scale.

Since undertaking its inaugural transmission line project in Saudi Arabia in 1976, Hyundai E&C has triumphed in delivering a total of 33 transmission line projects over the past five decades. This includes ongoing endeavours like the Hail-Al-Jouf 380㎸ transmission line. The aggregate length of power grid infrastructure built by Hyundai E&C in Saudi Arabia, including ongoing projects, surpasses 20,000 kilometres, equivalent to half the Earth’s circumference. Hyundai E&C’s trailblazing achievement includes the construction of the first high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line in Saudi Arabia, the 500㎸ HVDC transmission line, which is now joined by the latest advancement: the 525㎸ HDVC line construction project, further expanding the country’s power grid capabilities.

Furthermore, Hyundai E&C’s active participation in the Saudi power transmission and distribution sector is evident in its portfolio. Notably, the completion of the new Jubail 380㎸ substation stands as a significant milestone – the largest high-voltage substation in Saudi Arabia, finalised in 2019. Across approximately 70 projects, Hyundai E&C has demonstrated its expertise, including the successful execution of ventures like the Rafha Substation and the Shoaiba Substation expansion project.

A Hyundai E&C official shared, “Since our inaugural entry into the Saudi construction arena in 1975, we have consistently delivered 16 sizable projects, including noteworthy endeavours such as the Amiral Project and the Neom Running Tunnel. Our success is a testament to the trust vested in us by the Saudi government and our clients. We are committed to further expanding our presence in net-zero power infrastructure. As we contribute to the Saudi power grid’s growth by delivering the HVDC transmission line project – a cornerstone of the renewable energy grid sector – we solidify our position as key players in this evolving landscape.”
