Greece Aims to Expedite Permits for Foreign Farm Labor

Indeed, like most European Union member countries, Greece is gradually facing labor shortages that threaten the stability of its economy. However, the agricultural sector is one of the most affected, as many farms are failing to produce as expected due to a labor shortage.

Understanding the significance of this problem, the Greek government has embarked on the necessary activities to facilitate the issuance of permits to investors and ensure the reliability of foreign workers who come to the country, especially for this purpose.

Kyllini’s deputy mayor also recently met with the Bangladesh ambassador to discuss increasing the efficiency of the issuance of residence permits to agricultural employees. This meeting, in particular, highlighted the need for local governments and foreign embassies to work together to ensure that permit processing takes less time.

This is because the Andravida region, which is more prone to agricultural work, engages more foreign workers, especially those from Bangladesh. Essential workers in agriculture rely on permits from government agencies, and reducing bureaucratic red tape concerning permit release is paramount to preserving the workers’ sector. These figures indicate that Greece wants to minimize bureaucratic impediments and promote the warm reception of foreign workers.

Residency Rights for Undocumented Migrants: A Bold Step Forward

For the first time, the Greek government decided that in 2023, undocumented persons in Greece would be granted residency under the condition that they have a source of income and have been residing in Greece since 2020. This initiative mainly affects agricultural employees.

In seeking to regularize the status of these workers, Greece intends to meet its demand for workers in the agricultural sector and provide for the stability of these migrants who have benefitted the Greek economy. This also offers some other privileges for migrants who have provided that they have overstayed their permit and have embraced the Greek culture, hence making it a good place to look for foreign workers.
