Croatia Grants New Rights to Foreign Workers

The foreign workers in Croatia are soon to enjoy some additional rights as the country has decided to alter some of the conditions that guide those who enter its labor market.

The authorities of Croatia reportedly agreed to provide extra security in the form of compensation for foreign nationals who may lose their jobs in an effort to make Croatia more appealing to foreigners looking for work.

As the authorities have stated, they are developing regulations that will enable foreign nationals to continue to receive benefits for 60 days in the event that their employment contract is terminated. The international employees will have 60 days to search for alternative employment options in Croatia during this time.

As there are already shortages in several industries, Croatia hopes that by taking this action, immigrants would be discouraged from leaving the country.

Reacting to the action, the State Secretary in the Ministry of Labour, Pension System and Social Policy stated that the nation would benefit from this step by preventing the mistreatment of foreign workers, who frequently are unable to quit their jobs. He said that Croatia needs foreign labor, and this policy will help to keep them here by facilitating their ability to switch jobs without any hassles.

Croatia Wants to Double the Term of Work Permits to Three Years

Croatia intends to increase the validity of foreign workers’ employment permits as part of its efforts to both attract and retain most of the workers. They also revealed that they want to increase the duration of work licenses from one year to three years.

According to Croatia’s Minister of Labour, the country wishes to facilitate changes in employment status and make it easy for foreign workers to switch employers, which is why it is extending its validity.

The intention is to make a smoother transition for employees moving within the same company to new positions within the company, and also moving on to other employers. According to data from the Pension Insurance Institute, about 143,000 foreign workers are employed in Croatia. Companies from non-EU nations such as North Macedonia, Kosovo, Albania, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina employ most foreign laborers.

According to the 2023 EURES assessment, about thirty categories of jobs are lacking in Croatia. An increased likelihood of obtaining a work visa and entering Croatia to commence working exists for foreign nationals whose occupation is on the shortage list.
