Competition for Skilled Staff is growing more amid the UK Offshore Workforce growth

According to the annual Workforce Insight study from Offshore Energies UK, it is said that it’s essential to keep and hire employees if you want to ensure the security of Britain’s energy supplies.

Due to the present low oil prices, the demand for skilled personnel in the oil and gas industry is anticipated to increase. However, many of these jobs have been cut due to falling oil prices. This will lead to an increase in competition for skilled staff across the sector as companies look at ways they can reduce their costs while maintaining competitiveness within their industry. For a better understanding, let’s show you the findings.

The findings

  • The oil, gas, and renewable energy industries added 22,000 jobs overall in 2021, and more jobs are anticipated to follow;
  • As more personnel were permitted on sites as a result of COVID-19 restrictions, there was a 12% overall increase in the number of persons working offshore in March 2021 compared to March 2020; and
  • 45% of the total workforce was between the ages of 30-44, with a decline in the workforce above the age of 60.

Supply chain and personnel director for OEUK Katy Heidenreich stated, “Our analysis demonstrates that competition for skills and ongoing uncertainty around taxes could mean a premature end for the UK’s clean energy objectives. Governments must take immediate measures to boost industry confidence so that we can find and keep the talent we need.

The competition for talented labor is growing after the pandemic and as the challenge of energy security grows. Competition from large national infrastructure projects is exacerbating the shortfall.

She added, pointing out that more than 200,000 individuals helped the UK’s offshore energy sector last year, and that many of OEUK’s members are currently dealing with serious talent shortages when delivering work to assist the UK’s energy security.

According to her, “OEUK is currently working with our members to establish an accurate picture of the nature of these gaps, identify the causes of them, and recommend an action plan that we will share with the government.”

The publication also mentioned that efforts are being made to create an offshore energy skill “passport,” and that training organizations are working together to unify criteria for the 15 most popular offshore positions.
