Canada Suppresses Eligibility Criteria to Shrink Visa Backlog

Canada has become the most popular destination for immigrants, tourists, and students. Millions of people move to Canada every year for numerous reasons, such as education, jobs, and witnessing eye-snagging attractions. And the number of visitors to Canada has been increasing aggressively after the pandemic.

The IRCC plans to greatly overcome the backlog of visitor visa applications by the end of February 2023. To accomplish the goal of reducing the backlog of tourist visa applications, the IRCC will undertake two major actions-

  • The foremost action is to process a large number of applications shortly. The IRCC is set to promptly process the 195,000 applications in bulk to minimize the backlog. This will help tourists from countries that need visas to visit Canada.
  • The second action will be shutting down some eligibility requirements that candidates need to comply with to obtain a visa. Cutting off eligibility requirements would be applicable for the 450,000 applicants. In this impending change, candidates will be exempted from proving they will leave Canada once the visa hits the expiry date.

Applicants will still have to undergo eligibility requirements. The core purpose of this eligibility check is to ensure that the applicant doesn’t possess any criminal background and is safe for national safety. To get the visitor visa, applicants would be required to satisfy all the other eligibility requirements listed.

The IRCC has been processing applications faster than ever in the post-pandemic era. Processing the application speedily will help to suppress the backlog of applications as soon as possible. The immigration minister, Mr. Sean Fraser, said that the IRCC processed 290,000 applicants in November 2022. This is higher than the average number of applications processed monthly in 2019. The average monthly processed applications in 2019 were around 180,000.

After a pause of 18 months due to the pandemic, Canada resumed processing applications in July 2022. Canada has seen a swiftness in processing applications on a large scale quickly. Despite swiftness, the concerned authorities have a lot to finish to meet the pre-pandemic targets.

In December 2022, the backlog of applications fell to 2.1 million from 2.2 million in 2022. It indicates, from July to December, the IRCC processed the application on a large scale. According to the IRCC, there were around 700,000 applications for temporary resident visas in the system as of early December 2022.
