Brexit’s Unexpected Impact on UK Skills Shortage Isn’t Going Anywhere Soon

The company claimed that as more businesses seek to hire workers from outside, the EU has “contributed to the current skills shortage.”

As more companies try to hire workers from abroad, a Chester law company has drawn attention to the impact that Brexit would have on the UK’s skills shortfall.

According to employment attorneys at Aaron & Partners, there has been a significant increase in immigration work from businesses. They said this is due to a lack of skills in several areas, with manufacturing, pharmacy, and healthcare being among the most severely affected.

While the increase in work started following the UK’s exit from the European Union in 2016, Adam Haines, a corporate immigration and employment law partner at the company, remarked that it has been particularly acute during the past 12 months.

As a result of historically low unemployment rates and the rising skills gap in the UK, he claimed that many businesses are looking abroad to find solutions.

Companies that need assistance filling openings have dramatically increased their demand, and it has been witnessed. Many different companies are putting a lot of effort into assisting regional businesses in hiring engineers and carers across numerous industries.

Manufacturing, pharmacy, and healthcare are the three most prevalent sectors. Even nevertheless, inquiries from farming and food processing companies have increased recently.

The free movement between the UK and the EU ended in 2020. As a result, EU citizens who want to work in the country must now obtain a legitimate visa.

According to this, businesses need a sponsor license if they want to hire people from abroad, among other restrictions. As a result of businesses needing assistance with application procedures, the workload of employment lawyers has increased.

In addition to stating that the problem will persist through 2023 and beyond, Mr. Haines claimed that the restrictions Brexit has placed on immigration have contributed to the skills shortages there in Europe.

Nevertheless, he believes that trade deals like the one currently being negotiated with Australia will incorporate a mobility deal to simplify hiring expertise and personnel from Australia. The agreement, inked in December 2021, is scheduled to go into effect later this year.

Mr. Haines added that they know that many firms are concerned about this. The restrictions on immigration that Brexit imposed, which led to the present skills deficit here, mean that even though the decision to leave the EU was made more than six years ago, its effects are still very much felt today.
