Canada: Open Work Permits To Spouses Of Temporary Foreign Workers

Good News for Temporary Skilled Workers: Canada will now allow the spouses of temporary employees to be eligible for a work permit in a two-year initiative to solve its labor shortage crisis.

The Canadian government has announced that the spouses and children of temporary workers of working age will be permitted to work in Canada in a phased approach beginning in January. Immigration Minister Sean Fraser said that this move is part of aiding firms in finding the individuals they need to fill their labor shortages.

The government of Canada is planning to keep supporting companies with finding qualified employees while simultaneously promoting employee welfare and bringing families together by granting family members work permits at all skill levels.

IRCC has stated that with this new measure, the families of 200,000 temporary skilled workers will now be eligible to work in Canada. Regarding employment statistics, Canada issued about 645,000 work permits between January and October of 2022, which is more than four times the 163,000 granted during the same period last year.

Additionally, according to the IRCC, this temporary measure intends to enhance the workers’ emotional health, physical health, and financial security by maintaining families. As a result, it is envisioned that the employee will fit in with their community and workplace better.

Three Phases of Family Work Permit

Phase One

Starting in January 2023, families of workers entering Canada under the International Mobility Program or the high-wage stream of the TFWP will be able to apply for an open work permit.

Phase Two

Phase two’s goal is to extend the measure, in the wake of consultations, to family members of TFWP workers who are employed in the low-wage stream.

Phase Three

The measure will be extended to include family members of agricultural employees in phase three after consultation with agricultural partners and stakeholders to determine operational viability.

Hybrid Work Mode: Becoming Popular In Canada

According to a Statistics Canada report, hybrid work arrangements became more common in November, with almost one in ten Canadian workers choosing to work from home at least occasionally while still spending the rest of the week at a different location.

Canada is becoming more and more popular for hybrid work arrangements. According to the statistics agency’s most recent Labour Force Survey, “the proportion of workers who have hybrid arrangements, that is, who usually work both at home and in a location other than home, rose by 0.4 percentage points to 9.4% in November, continuing a gradual upward trend since the beginning of 2022.”

Being able to work from home is not adversely affected by the development of hybrid work arrangements, which is very significant. Almost one in six Canadian employees worked from home in the post-COVID-19 epidemic world.

However, since November 2021, when full-time employment first rose above its pre-COVID-19 pandemic level, full-time employment has increased by 460,000 jobs or 2.9 percent.  In the 12 months leading up to November, the proportion of workers employed full-time increased overall by 0.8 percentage points to 81.9 percent, according to Statistics Canada.

Canada: Exclusively Offered Jobs

In November, 10,000 paid positions were created in Canada, and the unemployment rate decreased from 0.1% to 5.1%. Most of these new employees were women between 25 and 54, working in the financial, insurance, real estate, and leisure industries.

In the financial, insurance, real estate, rental, and leasing industries in November, another 21,000 people found employment, with those positions being evenly distributed across the nation.

With most of the recent positions in that sector concentrated in Quebec and Alberta, the manufacturing industry also offered 19,000 jobs that month, adding to the increase of 24,000 in October.
