Técnicas Reunidas and joined by FCC and Entrade GmbH- a subsidiary of the Turkish company ENKA, were awarded the contract to design and develop an emission-free regasification terminal in Hamburg, Germany.
The project is structured as an Engineering, Construction and Procurement (EPC) contract, aiming to construct a terminal with an impressive capacity of 13.3 billion cubic meters (Bm3) of nominal gas per year.
Emission-free regasification terminal in Hamburg: A project of strategic importance
Located in the river port of Stade, part of Hamburg’s metropolitan region, the new import terminal will enhance Germany’s supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and green gases, while also facilitating a future focus on hydrogen in the market. The site for the terminal is owned by Dow Chemicals, which is contributing to the project as a development partner.
An innovative aspect of the terminal will be its utilization of Dow’s industrial waste heat, allowing for regasification without additional carbon dioxide emissions. Técnicas Reunidas is tasked with designing the terminal and the two storage tanks—each with a capacity of 240,000 cubic meters—while overseeing the procurement of the necessary equipment and materials for the project.
FCC will handle the construction of the tanks and execute all site preparation and civil works, while Entrade GmbH will focus on the electromechanical assembly activities.
The project is split into two phases, and according to Técnicas Reunidas, the entire plant execution is projected to conclude by 2027.
The Challenge: Deploying a Skilled Workforce
One of the primary hurdles in executing the Hamburg terminal project was the need for a skilled workforce with the right technical expertise and experience. The project necessitated a wide array of professionals, including heavy equipment operators, welders, electricians, engineers, and technicians. With local labor markets unable to fulfill these requirements, Enka sought the assistance of Dynamic Staffing Services (DSS), a premier global workforce recruitment agency, to address this challenge.
