Israeli officials had approved a quota of 92,000 foreign workers to fill positions in industry, hotels, and restaurants. With this authorization, Israel has officially approved foreign labor for the restaurant business for the first time.
Specifically, agricultural laborers are allocated 70% of the quota. Manpower and production losses in Israeli agriculture are astounding. Prior to October 7, 29,900 foreign workers, largely from Thailand, were employed in greenhouses, packing houses, farms, and orchards in Israel.
While Palestinian laborers are temporarily prohibited as security hazards, Israeli workers who could have filled the voids have been summoned up for military reserve duty. Farmers have not been able to easily access fields and orchards in many agricultural areas that are located within two kilometers of the Lebanese border.
CEO of Beresheet, a fruit-packing company jointly owned by several kibbutzim in the Upper Galilee and Golan Heights, said, “Despite the challenges of the war, the packing house works around the clock, with the aim of continuously providing fresh Israeli produce while complying with the directives of the Home Front Command.”
They further stated that they are ready to market the produce of the farmers in the Golan and Galilee to marketing chains and wholesale companies. During the peak of the picking season, the fruit growers face picking under Hezbollah fire. Thanks to the hardworking farmers and laborers, they will definitely be able to provide the produce to the people living in the State of Israel. With 2,000 of them working in restaurants for the first time, the remaining foreign laborers will cover vacancies in hotels and industry.
