High Demand and Rising Pay: Civil Engineers in Hot Job Market

The ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) has released its 2023 Civil Engineering Salary Report, which shows that civil engineers’ pay has increased more quickly than in previous years. The median pre-tax income from all sources for civil engineers is $128,000.

Between 2022 and 2023, base salaries grew by almost 7%. The survey also notes that those civil engineers with a Professional Engineers license earn a median primary income of $132,000, approximately $30,000 higher than those without licenses or qualifications.

The research also revealed that civil engineers have high job satisfaction, with 66.3% of respondents reporting being pleased or very satisfied with their financial pay, up from 63.3% the year before.

The employment shortage has led to an increase in demand for civil engineers, according to the U.S. Bureau of Employment Statistics. Lehman noted that it will persist for the ensuing ten years. The need will persist because of the widespread infrastructure’s age and poor condition and the additional financing being applied.

Nearly 76% of respondents are given the ability to work remotely, which is a benefit that is becoming more and more popular with employees ever since the COVID-19 pandemic started. More than 90% of respondents have access to health insurance benefits through their employer.

Additionally, more than two-thirds of poll participants stated that they were extremely satisfied with the promotion prospects provided by their place of employment.

Every autumn, the ASCE Civil Engineering Salary Report is published. It is based on information provided by Society members regarding their employment and pay. The report for this year was produced using data from more than 3,200 members.

Since its founding in 1852, ASCE has represented more than 150,000 civil engineers across the globe. It is the oldest national engineering society in America. ASCE advocates for expanding and optimizing infrastructure investment and works to advance engineering knowledge and skills. It also strives to increase awareness of the need to maintain and update the nation’s infrastructure utilizing resilient and sustainable practices.

As the demand for infrastructure and construction projects continues to rise, so does the demand for skilled civil engineers. With the increasing demand, it’s no surprise that the pay for civil engineers has also been on the rise.
