How to Apply for IT Jobs in Canada?
Are you interested in pursuing IT positions in Canada? If yes, there are several key factors to keep in mind. Firstly, creating a strong resume that effectively highlights your IT-related skills and experience is important.
Additionally, obtaining relevant certifications or degrees is another highly effective way to enhance your competitiveness as a candidate. Finally, it’s important to prepare for the interview process and be ready to demonstrate your technical knowledge and problem-solving abilities.
These were the basic requirements, but you might be thinking, what about the legal process? How can I apply to settle there, and how can I apply for a visa? So, here we have provided a thorough guide for you on how to immigrate to Canada for an IT job.
There are multiple pathways if you plan to immigrate to Canada. IRCC introduced Express Entry in the year 2015, which is a system used to manage the applications of the potential applicants in the pool.
Express Entry System (EE)
Express Entry is a system managing three main federal economic program applications. The three available pathways for economic immigration are FSWP, FSTP, and CEC. These are all the Express Entry-approved immigration pathways available to applicants seeking to immigrate to Canada in 2023.
Following one of the programs is the only way to be granted permanent residency in Canada. Each EE pathway has its own set of qualifications for eligibility. Before applying for employment, be sure you meet the requirements.
- FSWP – FSWP stands for Federal Skilled Worker Program. It is among the most often advised immigration paths to Canada. To apply under this program one has to meet a minimum point based system of 67.
- FSTP – The Federal Skilled Trades Programme is known as FSTP. Applicants are ranked in the EE pool according to their CRS results. Trade occupation workers are given priority under this government program.
- CEC – CEC stands for Canadian Experience Class. This program also uses CRS scoring for ranking. Those interested in applying through this program must have at least a year of work experience in Canada.
Apart from these, one more pathway, such as PNP, which stands for Provincial Nominee Program, is another pathway for skilled workers to immigrate to Canada. Let’s see how does it work?
Provincial Nominee Program
Each territory and province in Canada regulates its own PNP program, with its eligibility requirements and selection criteria. The PNP program is designed to address the specific labour needs of each province or territory, so the eligibility criteria and application process may differ depending on the territory or province you are applying to.
To apply for the PNP program, you must first check if you meet the eligibility criteria for the specific province or territory you are interested in.
If you are eligible, you will need to submit an application to the provincial government. The province will assess your application and may invite you to apply for permanent residency. If you successfully get a nomination from a territory or province, you can apply for permanent residency through the federal government’s Express Entry system.
Overall, the PNP pathway is a great option for workers who desire to immigrate to Canada but may not meet a high CRS under the Express Entry system. It’s worth considering if you want to start a new life in Canada.
Now, the question is which pathway is best for you as an IT professional and which province desperately needs IT-skilled workers in Canada.
In PNP, Ontario Immigration Nominee Program is considered one of the best pathways. Ontario province has a high demand for IT professionals, and to meet the required workers, it regulates tech-specific draws through the Human Capital Priorities stream, one of the four sub-streams under the Ontario Immigration Nominee Program (ONIP).
The skilled professionals in Canada’s Express Entry pool are the main focus of the Human Capital Priorities stream. The tech draws target Express Entry applicants with experience in one of six target occupations.
Occupations Eligible for Ontario’s Tech Draws | |
Occupation Title | NOC Code |
Computer and information systems managers | 20012 |
Computer engineers (except for designers and software engineers) | 21311 |
Data scientists | 21211 |
Software engineers and designers | 21231 |
Computer systems developers and programmers | 21230 |
Web developers and programmers | 21234 |
Ontario seeks applicants in the Express Entry pool and sends a Notification of Interest to the selected candidates directly. To prepare and submit a complete application to the province of Ontario, candidates will have 45 days from receiving a Notification of Interest (NOI) from the selection process.
If a candidate’s OINP application is accepted, Ontario will nominate them on a provincial level, raising their CRS score by 600 points and putting them well beyond the cut-off needed to be invited to apply.
When Ontario originally discussed the concept of luring tech employees to the province through the OINP, they suggested establishing a brand-new, independent PNP stream specifically for them. Ontario instead decided to incorporate the tech-specific drawings into the HCP stream.
