Are you worried about investing the time and money required to gain certifications? If yes, then, in that case, the following information might change your mind. Around 80% of medium and large organizations’ HR professionals claimed they depended on certifications during the hiring process.
The latest Workforce and Learning Trends 2023 study from CompTIA contains information on the changing nature of the professional technical workforce. The rationale behind the reliance on certificates appears to be simple. Many lack the technical expertise required to evaluate candidates. Hence, they require a third-party source to verify skills.
Even for HR professionals with strong technical backgrounds, certificates can reassure them that a candidate’s abilities are current and in line with the requirements of an organization.
The report’s researcher stated, “An employee’s capabilities can be more understood through certifications than with a degree, especially if one was obtained in a different field of study or gained one years ago.”
However, according to the report, there is a drawback: “Despite their importance, certificates also lead to confusion, particularly considering their recent expansion. In every particular sector, there is a deluge of badges, designations, and other forms of credentialing, making it challenging to understand their value. Smaller businesses frequently lack an expert on staff who can vouch for the merit of a particular award.

At larger companies, candidates for jobs are frequently put through several technical interviews to assess their talents. These interviews can easily support certifications (or prove an applicant has the technical chops even without certs). It’s important to consider a candidate’s cultural fit with the rest of the team, their technical abilities, and the number of certifications they have collected over the years.
For those committed to certifications, you need to set aside time and money to get them. Some advanced certificates demand years of work experience. If you’re unclear whether you can afford the expense, ask your employer if they have a program to support your skill upgradation. With the growing trend of companies covering employees’ training costs, they’ll say yes.
